HISTORY OF ARDEE CHURCH
The Solemn Dedication of the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady by Holiness Pope John Paul II on 15th August 1980, is indeed, a memorable and historic event in the life of the Parish of Ardee Collon. It was one for which the parishioners prepared and in which they became wholeheartedly involved. Even the weather which had been less than summer-like, was all that would have been asked for so that the day will live longer in the memories of all who witnessed it.
We have a lovely new church, modern in design, simple in its beauty. Only in years to come when it has grown into the life of the community and matured into the surrounding landscape – only then will its value and beauty be fully appreciated. It will stand at the head of the town as a monument to the generosity, the spirit and the faith of you, the people of this generation. May God reward you all. (Canon Patrick McDonnell,P.P., Dec 1974)
“I have loved, O Lord, the beauty of thy House; and the place where Thy glory dwelleth.” (Ps.26:8)
The church of the Nativity of Our Lady has been designed to sit quietly at the junction of the roads leading north, south, east and west. The design envisaged a building which would acknowledge its sitting at the centre of a busy town and not cut itself off from the passers-by. Today, the church is not alone a focal point for the town people; it is a building of interest to all who pass through.
